In Mzansi, 9 August holds special significance as it is recognised as Women's Day. This annual observance invites us to take a moment to honour the remarkable achievements, vital contributions, and unwavering resilience of women throughout history. It is a time to celebrate the strength of women and reflect on the progress made toward achieving gender parity in our society.
Consider the legacy of Lillian Ngoyi, often referred to as the "Mother of Resistance" who was a formidable anti-apartheid activist. Reflect on the pioneering spirit of Charlotte Maxeke, who boldly led the historic protest against the pass laws. With these powerful figures in mind, let us now turn our attention to the extraordinary women depicted in the story of Shaka iLembe.
Liyana
Portrayed by the talented Luyanda Zuma, Liyana is the beautiful and spirited daughter of Mdlaka. She dares to challenge the formidable Sigidi, played by Lemogang Tsipa. Liyana is unique. She possesses the rare ability to soften Sigidi's heart, eliciting a warmth that we rarely see from him.
Unlike many young women of her time, Liyana bravely confronts Sigidi's imposing mother, Nandi, portrayed by Nomzamo Mbatha. When her younger brother, Nyembezi, played by Olly Zondi, is forced into Sigidi's ibutho (regiment), Liyana stands firm against Sigidi and Nandi's authoritative will, even though she does not win the fight. With grace and determination, Zuma brings this complex character to life, embodying the strength and courage inherent in Liyana.
Ntombazana
The role of Ntombazana is masterfully interpreted by Amanda Seome. She is the granddaughter of the notorious witch Ntombazi, portrayed by Khabonina Qubeka, and the only daughter of the fearsome Zwide, played by Wiseman Mncube. Ntombazana's life is riddled with obstacles in a society where male heirs reign supreme. However, she rises above her circumstances with tenacity and cunning.
Her intelligence and strategic prowess shine as she navigates the treacherous waters of her world. In a stunning display of her capabilities, she cleverly devises a plan to outsmart Dingiswayo, played by Thembinkosi Mthembu, ultimately leading him into a trap that seals his fate. Ntombazana emerges as a formidable force, a testament to the strength of women.
Hletjiwe
Sikhanyiso Sithole brings Hletjiwe to life, portraying her as a woman caught in the tumultuous tides of political alliances. Married to Nomahlanjana, Zwide's son portrayed by Zamani Mbatha, Hletjiwe initially strives to fulfill her duties as a loyal wife. Yet, when faced with the harsh reality of her husband's abuse, she transforms her suffering into a pillar of strength.
Choosing to break free from the chains of her oppressive marriage, Hletjiwe embarks on a courageous journey toward self-liberation. Her story captures the essence of resilience, highlighting her determination to reclaim her identity in a world that seeks to confine her.
Each of these women, Liyana, Ntombazana, and Hletjiwe, embodies the enduring spirit of resilience and the transformative power of courage. They remind us that while the struggle for equality and recognition persists, the strength and tenacity of women continue to shape and redefine the narrative of our history.
