When Isibaya premiered in 2013, it plunged viewers into the tumultuous world of two powerful taxi business families in Bhubesini: the Zungus, led by Mpiyakhe Zungu (played by Siyabonga Twala), and the Ndlovu family, led by Samson Ndlovu (Bheki Mkhwane). The drama, produced by The Bomb Shelter Company acclaimed team also behind hits like Yizo Yizo, Zone 14, and Ayeye, and more recently, the historic and multi-award-winning Shaka iLembe, initially revolved around their intense conflicts, bitter rivalries, daily struggles, and the various issues that surrounded them. These two formidable families were eventually united by the marriage of their children: Thandeka Zungu, the beautiful daughter of Mpiyakhe, and S'busiso Ndlovu (Sdumo Mtshali) of the Ndlovu family. This union was meant to bring peace between the warring taxi bosses, and Thandeka, portrayed by Nomzamo Mbatha with warmth and innocence, was central to the show's emotional core. Over several seasons, the series masterfully explored themes of power, family, betrayal, and tradition across rural and urban South Africa.
More than a decade later, many of the actors who brought Isibaya to life are now part of Shaka iLembe, the epic historical drama that traces the rise of the Zulu kingdom. The setting may have shifted from modern-day KwaZulu-Natal to the early 1800s, but the storytelling remains deeply rooted in questions of power, duty, and legacy.
Mbatha, who embodied Thandeka with such grace that had South Africans fall in love with her, steps into Shaka iLembe series as the formidable Queen Nandi, Shaka's mother and as an executive producer. Her powerful performance in Shaka iLembe adds profound emotional weight, portraying a woman whose strength and determination shaped one of the most important leaders in African history.
Other familiar faces have also transitioned into this epic historical drama:
Nkanyiso Mzimela, previously known as the spoiled Melusi Zungu, takes on the role of Somveli, King Dingiswayo's troubled son and heir. His portrayal skillfully balances youthful pride with inner conflict, imbuing Somveli with both vulnerability and tension as the character navigates betrayal and political responsibilities.
Andile Mxakaza, remembered as the loyal Fezile, returns to the screen as Mdlaka, one of Shaka’s trusted warriors. The unwavering loyalty and physicality that defined Fezile are present here too, though Mdlaka operates in a world where alliances are forged through war and unyielding trust.
Zinhle Mabena, who played the scheming and ambitious Sihle Ngubane on Isibaya, now appears as Queen Nkankane in Shaka iLembe season 2.
Award-winning actor Abdul Khoza, best known for his role as Qaphela on Isibaya – a hot-headed, trained killing machine who eventually turned a new leaf – steps into the role of Cija in Shaka iLembe, a warrior whose loyalty is as fierce as his skill in battle.
Thulani Mtsweni, who portrayed Mpihlangene Zungu, Mpiyakhe's younger brother, now plays Sompisi in Shaka iLembe.
And Melusi Mbele, who played Bhekumuzi Zungu, returns as Nongila, a loyal steward working closely with Mkabayi. He is a quiet observer and a diligent spy, gathering information and keeping track of movements behind the scenes. Melusi is also part of a new crime drama series titled Levels coming this September on Mzansi Magic.
While Isibaya and Shaka iLembe belong to different eras and genres, they are inextricably linked by a powerful cast that continues to define South African television. These actors have matured with their roles, and their seamless transitions from the taxi wars of Bhubesini to the heart of the Zulu kingdom reflect a broader story about enduring talent, resilience, and the power of storytelling across generations.
