The essentials for life at res.

Moving to res is like starting a new chapter in your life – just ask besties, Sibongile and Zama from Sibongile & the Dlaminis. To help you transition, we've put together a starter pack for students moving to res.

Single bed or bunk bed

The bedrooms are compact, so you'll only need the essentials. Fortunately, you will be provided with either a single or a bunk bed. Make sure to bring your pillows, blankets, a desk lamp, a laundry basket, an extension cord, and a multiple plug.

Free Wi-Fi

Having free, reliable Wi-Fi is crucial. Ensure that your housing offers strong coverage that reaches every room. There should be multiple access points to guarantee optimal speed.

Food on a budget

Your student grocery budget may be limited, but you can still make it work by being smart about your shopping.

- Choose generic store brands instead of name-brand items; they usually taste the same and are much more affordable.

- Consider signing up for a grocery store's rewards membership or buying items that are on sale.

Clothing

Packing clothes can be quite overwhelming. Be sure to pack for every season you will encounter – but remember, this doesn't mean you should bring your entire wardrobe. Comfortable items that you can wear often, such as jeans, T-shirts, and sneakers, are essential. However, also include a smart outfit for special occasions, like career days.

Part-time job

Finding a part-time job can be highly beneficial. Not only does it help supplement your income, but it also teaches you how to organise and prioritise your time effectively.

Here are some part-time job options to consider as a student:

Retail jobs

On-campus positions

Promotional roles

Online tutoring

With this starter pack, you'll be well-prepared for your new life at res!
