During the latest episode of Shaka iLembe, fans were ready to book an appointment with an optometrist because they couldn’t believe their eyes when they spotted not one but two very recognisable faces.
Podcast host MacG and musician Robot Boii both featured in the tense fight between Shaka and Phakatwayo. MacG and Robot Boii played members of the Qwabe clan, cheering on Phakatwayo because his loss would mean surrender to the Zulu.
Robot Boii and MacG certainly threw themselves with determination into their roles.
And the social streets were just as excited.
This is not the first time we’ve seen a musician cameo in Shaka iLembe. Remember spotting Sjava in season 1?
Cameos from musicians and other well-known personalities are nothing new in television. Game of Thrones found roles for Ed Sheeran, Snow Patrol’s Gary Lightbody, and Coldplay’s Will Champion, amongst others. Sometimes they even pop up as themselves: like Britney Spears, who played herself in Sabrina the Teenage Witch, Jane the Virgin, and Glee. Since we mentioned Coldplay, Chris Martin has also cameoed as himself, in Modern Family. Of course, given that Shaka’s second season is set in the early 1800s, MacG and Robot Boii obviously could not play themselves. Love it or hate, it’s a TV tradition that will continue to bemuse, amuse, and entertain.
