The course of true love never did run smooth, said Shakespeare. And oh it could not be more true when it comes to the romantic plight of Sikhunyana and Princess Hletjiwe. From the moment Sikhunyana set eyes upon the princess, he was smitten, but fate had other plans when it was revealed that she was betrothed to Sikhunyana’s brother, Nomahlanjana. It’s too bad that the princess is what the brothers have in common, because in most other aspects they are chalk and cheese.
Sikhunyana favours diplomacy and reason, while Nomahlanjana is a fierce and ambitious warrior, much like the boys’ father Zwide. What would Sikhunyana’s fate have been had he been born under a man like Dingiswayo whose temperament is similar? But Sikhunyana is from the mighty Ndwandwe clan, and despite being more of a diplomat, he seems to have accepted his duty and destiny, even putting up with his brother’s teasing after a bloody battle with the Thonga. But when it comes to matters of the heart, will he remain quiet and reserved?
Introduced in the first episode of the second season, Sikhunyana is portrayed by Anele Sphamandla Nene. Only two episodes in and this young actor has already made an impression. But Nene is no stranger to the craft, having already trod the boards in many a theatre production, including a play called The Hymns of a Sparrow, which he also wrote and directed. Debuting at the National Arts Festival in Makhanda, he has toured the play at various festivals and theatres including the Eswatini Theatre Club.
As Sikhunyana he has captured not only the heart of the princess but those of the viewers too. We can’t wait to see what lies in store not only for the character but for the actor too as Nene embarks on an exciting trajectory in his career that is sure to see him go from strength to strength.
